Total.Randomness.
*Did you know that the word "trivia" is derived from the Latin
expression for "three ways" & meant the spot where three roads cam
together? People would often meet & stop to chat at such crossroads.
Eventually the talk itself came to be called trivia.
*A patron
telephoned asking if the library had any of William Shakespeare's books
on tape and, if so, were any of them actually read by Mr. Shakespeare
himself?
*A common myth is that "kangaroo" was an aboriginal phrase
for "I don't understand." According to this legend, Lieutenant Cook and
naturalist Sir Joseph Banks were exploring the area when they happened
upon the animal. They asked a nearby local what the creatures were
called. The local responded "Kangaroo", meaning "I don't understand
you", which Cook took to be the name of the creature. The Kangaroo myth
was debunked in the 1970s by linguist John B. Haviland in his research
with the Guugu Yimithirr people. The word "kangaroo" actually derives
from the Guugu Yimithirr word gangurru, referring to grey kangaroos.

December Notes
Tis the season to…drive around and look at lights! One of my favorite activities in December is loading up the car with cookies and my spicy hot chocolate (a little cinnamon and a dash of cayenne!) and drive around looking at all the pretty Christmas lights. No matter what you’re celebrating, from Christmas to Chanukkah, birthdays to baby showers, SPL has something to help make your seasons bright. We’ve got crafts and cookbooks, stories to read by the fire, magazines to help you find that perfect winter wedding dress, or whittle toys for the grandkids.
Most of all, it’s a time to celebrate you, our patrons! We’re rolling out a very special gift for you this month, a new way to use our online catalog – right on your phone. We’ll keep you connected 24/7/365 to the things you need to teach, guide, and just plain entertain you. Stop by and grab a book to go. Happy Holidays from all of us at SPL to all of you – our best gift.
