2013 Summer Reading Programs

Summer reading programs benefit both children and teens in many ways--including the encouragement of a habit of reading that can last a lifetime, giving reluctant readers activities to get them interested and excited about books, and helping to keep reading skills up during the break. But summer reading programs are not just for children anymore--many libraries have adopted summer reading programs for adults as well. Literacy is important, and fostering a love of literature and the written word can have very positive effects on any age group.

Spencer Public Library's Summer Reading Programs are open to all ages and include prize incentives and drawings at varying levels. So whether you're a parent, a child, a teen, or an adult who loves to read, join us for the 2013 Summer Reading Programs. We'd love to have you!

Family Storytime with Terrance Simien

Musician Terrance Simien invites you to join him at Spencer Public Library for an evening of enjoyment, featuring stories and folklore from Creoles of Southern New Orleans.

For more than 2 decades Grammy award winning Zydeco artist Terrance Simien, 8th generation Louisiana Creole, has been shattering myths about what his indigenous Creole Zydeco music is and is not. Leading his Zydeco Experience Band, Simien has become one of the most respected and internationally recognized touring and recording artists in roots music today. He has performed over 5000 concerts, toured millions of miles to over 40 countries and reached at least a million people during his eventful 25 year career.

Terrance Simien will be in Spencer for a 3 day residency. Hancher Auditorium at the University of Iowa is sponsoring the visit through their SPOT outreach program, and the Clay County Community Foundation in honor of the Lillian Swanson Memorial Arts Fund is also helping to financially support this event.
