Summer Reading Program Come & Go Kickoff & Registration

Summer is almost here and with it comes our Summer Reading Programs. This year's themes are all about science.

Stop in and sign up for the 2014 Summer Reading Programs during our special come-and-go Kickoff Party from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on May 31st! While you're here, feel free to decorate a cookie!

Kids! Sign up for the program, get your bag of goodies, and decorate a cookie!

TEENS! Make sure you include us in your summer plans. We've got some fun programs planned and there will be plenty of awesome prizes this summer! Stop in, decorate a cookie, and get ready to start reading! The set-up is same as past years; read whatever you like and log your minutes to earn prizes. You can complete the program by reading as little as 15 minutes a day. That seems pretty easy, right?

Adults! Decorate a cookie and see all the wonderful programs and prizes we have planned for this year's science themed program, "Literary Elements". Be sure to sign up not only for the great programs, but for the weekly prize drawing and a chance to win a Kindle Fire!

Can't make it? Don't worry! We allow registrations at any time after May 31st, both in the library and online!

Notes from The Director....

Break out the grills! It’s National Barbecue Month and National Hamburger Month.  Don’t know what to grill? Come on down and pick up a cookbook.  And for a side dish pick up some refreshing fiction to read while you’re waiting for the charcoal to heat up.  It’s also National Photography Month and National Bike Month so grab a photography book and go ride our great trails to take pictures.  There’s a brand new one to explore.  If you post them on Facebook, tag Spencer Public Library so we can share our beautiful community.

I’d also like to take a moment to remember those men and women of the United States Military who gave their lives so that we could have the freedom to read whatever we like (one of many freedoms we enjoy). Thank you for you service. You are not forgotten.

Don’t forget,  the Summer Reading Program is just around the corner, so ready, set, READ!!
I’m currently reading: Riders of the Purple Sage – Zane Grey (I’ve never read it!)
           S – J.J. Abrams
I’m listening to: The Next Always – Nora Roberts

Happy Mother's Day!

Making the decision to have a child is momentous.  It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.  ~Elizabeth Stone

Happy Mother's Day!
Today is a special day, a day when we give thanks to the women who are mothers, or who have played an important role in our lives and help us to grow. Be sure to hug your mom or make that phone call, and thank her for all the hard work she did to help and care for you. Thanks to the teachers, neighbors, grannies, aunties, and all the other women who have made an impact on our lives.

We appreciate all you do!

Adult Programming in May

The Book To Movie Club will be reading, and then watching, 2001: A Space Odyssey written by Arthur C. Clarke and directed by Stanley Kubrick. Unlike most, this book and movie were developed concurrently and the movie was released before the book. With science fiction themes such as; the perils of technology and nuclear war, evolution, space exploration, and artificial intelligence it is the perfect movie to watch in June during our science themed adult Summer Reading Program. So read the book in May and then watch the movie in June.

The library will show the movie “Enough Said” starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus and James Gandolfini. “Enough Said” is a romantic comedy about two divorcees reentering the dating scene. Funny and insightful, “Enough Said” won numerous awards and is said to be one of the top five best movies of 2013 and it will be at the library for free– with snacks!
It may not feel like it, but summer is just around the corner and we will be registering for the Adult Summer Reading program on May 31 from 10-4. Decorate a cookie and see all the wonderful programs and prizes we have planned for this year’s science themed program, “Literary Elements”.  For Summer Reading Programs we will be making seed bombs, learning about rain gardens, participating in making mozzarella cheese, watching great movies like “2001: A Space Odyssey”, making ice-cream, and having an end of the program science party. Be sure to sign-up not only for the great programs, but for the weekly prize drawing and a chance to win a Kindle Fire!
