Despite The Rain, We Are Still Planting The New Rain Garden Tonight! Join Us!

Jump in and get your hands dirty at Spencer Public Library!  Join us Thursday, August 28th at 6:00 p.m. to help plant the flowers in the new Rain Garden across the street and in the planter boxes on the library patio.  Volunteers of all ages welcome, wear your work duds and we’ll have the flowers planted in no time! All the plants are native plantings to Iowa and were made possible by a generous donation by the Clay County Soil and Water Conservation District.  There will be refreshments after the planting, so stop on by and pitch in.

TEENS

Wow – what an amazing summer!  I just have to say: teens - you’re awesome!  I’d like to congratulate all the teens who registered for and
completed the Teen Summer Reading Program.  It was a fun summer and I’m already looking forward to next year.

Hopefully you’ve checked out some of the Teens’ Top Ten nominations this summer.  The Teens’ Top Ten is one of my favorite booklists because the books are nominated and voted on by teens!  Voting opens August 15 and continues through early October, when the top ten are announced during Teen Read Week.  We have all the nominated books, so there’s still time to read a few if you haven’t had a chance yet.  Once the voting is open follow this link, www.ala.org/yalsa/reads4teens, and vote for your three favorites! Check out the display in the teen area for this year’s nominated book and past winners.

Registration is required.

Our internet and phone services have been restored.

Notes From The Director's Chair

The summer has flown by us!  I can’t believe it’s already August. Summer seems to be slipping through our fingers.  But, we’ve still got to make it through a month that’s often the hottest one.
August is National Golf Month, so grab some books or DVDs and improve that swing before you hit the links.  Not a golfer?  The first week in August is Simplify Your Life Week.  We’ve got lots of information on how to declutter, de-stress, and make your life easier.  Catch a movie with us, or stop by one of our great programs provided for you at no cost.  Free is definitely not stressful, right?
August 8 is National Sneak Some Zucchini onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day.  I certainly wouldn’t mind it if someone would sneak some zukes and cukes onto my porch, or…bring them into the library. How are everyone’s tomatoes doing?  I really enjoy refrigerator pickles on a hot August day.  It’s also getting time to get those veggies canned.  Stop by and check out all the books we have on food preservation.  I really like Sandor Katz’s book, The Art of Fermentation.
There’s always something new here at SPL so stop in, explore, enjoy and don’t forget to say hi!

I’m currently reading: A Star For Mrs. Blake by April Smith

Gentlemen bootleggers: the true story of Templeton Rye, Prohibition, and a small town in cahoots  by Bryce T. Bauer
I’m listening to: Daring Ladies of Lowell by Kate Alcott

Kids Korner

Thank you to everyone who participated in SPL's 2014 Summer Reading Program! This summer's theme, Fizz Boom Read!, was a blast, and I hope you enjoyed all of the hands-on science fun we brought you throughout the last two months! August will be fairly quiet in comparison.

We will be celebrating all those who read 15 hours or more over the summer with the Kids' Carnival on Friday, August 1st at 6:00. We will serve walking tacos for supper, and everyone who turned in their Level 3 Certificate is invited to play the many carnival games and join in a cupcake walk while earning lots of fun prizes!

Other than that, we will have our regular weekday storytime for infants and toddlers on Monday evening, and for preschool (and up) on Tuesday and Thursday mornings until school starts. There will be no children's programs the week of August 18th through the 23rd due to vacations.
