February Programming For Adults

DIY Club is back and we have a great project planned for Valentine’s Day. We will be painting canvas bags with a Valentines theme. Keep if for yourself or give it to someone you love! Registration is required.
For a Valentine treat, we will be showing the romantic movie, “The Best of Me”, starring James Marsden.  Based on the Nicholas Sparks bestselling novel by the same name, “The Best of Me” is about a pair of former high school sweethearts who reunite after many years when they return to visit their small hometown. Registration required.
Our Book Into Movie Club will watch the movie, “Jane Eyre”, starring Orson Welles and Joan Fontaine. Jane Eyre is the classic dark love story written by Charlotte Bronte. You don’t have to read the book to sign-up for the movie. Be sure to sign up for the next Book Into Movie,  Kim, by Rudyard Kipling. “Kim is set in an imperialistic world; a world strikingly masculine, dominated by travel, trade and adventure, a world in which there is no question of the division between white and non-white.” Goodreads. Registration required.

In step with the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the All Iowa/All Spencer Reads book for 2015 is, My Name is Mary Sutter by Robin Oliveira.   “Mary Sutter is a youthful midwife from Albany, New York, who becomes a nurse to soldiers of the Union Army—men who were more likely to die from now-preventable infections than they were from gunshots. Above all, Mary is hell-bent on becoming a surgeon at a time when no woman in this country had been admitted to a medical school.” Helen Mallon, Fiction Writers Review. You can check out a copy of My Name is Mary Sutter at the library. Next month, watch for programming around the book including Roy Linn, State Graves Registration Officer for the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War. He will discuss Iowa’s role in the Civil War.

Teen Events In January

It’s time for another Teen Book Club! Our winter read is The Maze Runner by
James Dashner.  I’m super excited about this book. It’s full of suspense that will keep you on your toes until the very end.  The back of the book reads, “When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can remember is his name.  He’s surrounded by strangers –boys whose memories are also gone.  Outside the towering stone walls that surround the Glade is a limitless, ever-changing maze.  It’s the
only way out – and no one’s ever made it through alive.  Then a girl
arrives. The first girl ever.  And the message she delivers is terrifying.”

All teens will get a copy of the book to keep at the first meeting. In each meeting we’ll discuss the book, eat pizza, and enjoy fun crafts and
activities and the last meeting will include a special viewing of the

A Note From The Director

Happy New Year!
I know that New Year’s thoughts often turn into resolutions, so I want to
remind you that SPL is here to help you find information to achieve your goals. Perhaps embark on a series of Great Courses from our collection.  They are DVD lectures on a vast variety of subjects from some of the best
professors in the country.   If you don’t know what to resolve to do… try reading more!  Perhaps you’ll make this year all fantasy fiction, or an entire year of biographies.  Or maybe pick a theme.  If I were to pick a theme for a year, I would choose books that had some tie to food.  If you received an
e-reader, tablet, or new smart phone as a gift, don’t forget that you can check out audiobooks and ebooks from the library for free 24/7/365.
Whatever you choose to do this year, I hope the year is filled with luck and blessings for you and yours!
