April Adults

Happy Spring everyone! You can use the extended daylight hours as an opportunity to visit the library. Take a look at the wonderful adult programs planned for this month.
The library will show the movie Unbroken starring Jack O’Connell and Domhnall Gleeson. Unbroken is based on the popular book, Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand. After a near-fatal plane crash in WWII, Olympian Louis Zamperini spends a harrowing 47 days in a raft with two fellow crewmen before he is captured and sent to a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp. Always free at the library – with snacks!
We have a treat for you! Dan Kaercher, retired editor–in–chief of Midwest Living magazine and retired IPTV host of “Iowa’s Simple Pleasures”, will be at the library to speak about “Iowa’s Hidden Treasures”. Dan spent years traveling most of Iowa’s 99 counties in search of attractions and get-a-ways close to home. Come and learn what surprises await you in your own back yard!
The DIY Club will be decorating mugs with Sharpies. Join us as we turn drab pieces of pottery into something fabulous! Warning: You will become addicted to this craft.
The Book Into Movie Club will watch the movie Kim starring Errol Flynn and Dean Stockwell. Based on the Rudyard Kipling classic novel, Kim is a 1950 movie about an orphan of a British soldier who, during the British Raj, Kim poses as a Hindu and is torn between his loyalties to a Buddhist mystic and aiding the English secret service. A masculine story about travel and adventure! If you haven’t read the book, no problem, you can still see the movie.
Our next Book Into Movie is Like Water For Chocolate by Laura Esquivel. Tita is unable to marry her lover, Pedro, because of the Mexican tradition of the youngest daughter not marrying in order to care for her parents. Tita cares for her mother and is only able to express herself through her cooking. A mouthwatering and sensual read we will “Escape the Ordinary” (Adult Summer Reading Program Theme) by watching the subtitled and award winning film, “Like Water for Chocolate”, in June. The film is rated R.
Remember to get your poem into the library for the Spencer Public Library’s Poetry Contest. The deadline is April 30 at 5:00 PM.
