Celebrate the ratifying of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote (August 1920) with a special Chautauqua performance at Spencer Public Library. Helen Lewis portrays Jane Addams in her program, Jane Addams: Suffrage and the Progressive Presidents. Jane Addams (1860-1935) was one of the most well recognized and generally admired women of her time. Addams knew and worked with many Presidents toward woman’s suffrage. She worked hard for social reform and she was a strong peace activist believing that peace doesn’t just come from lack of war, but from an equality in all humans. Addams was the first American woman awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (1931) for her years of peace activism.
